There is no need to describe, because the site is almost empty: just a white page with no graphic effects, and with a message saying: "you are lost on the Internet? We'll help you" and then there is a little star and an arrow with this words at the end of it "you are here!" It is absolutely useless, it is just a little funny. But I can't beleive that people are ready to buy a ".com" for this! But I must admit there could be positive points about it, since I have to proove that I CAN be positive! The first time I opened the site, I had a good laugh. Then I thought that it was an interesting way to make fun of the Internet in general and the fact that for some people, Internet can show such an opacity about how it works and how to use it. I think it is relatively clever in the way that it is say with a little feww words but the message is relevent.

Student presentations part 2

Charlotte's example was www.thefanlisting.org, which is a website that provides a list of "fan listing" websites. You choose the one related to the subject you want and then, once you're on this site, you are offered to register to be part of the list. But I must admit that, after thinking about it, I still don't get the point of it: why would people put their name (or pseudo, another strange concept...) in a list of fans since the site they signed in doesn't even deliver interesting information on the subject you chose? I think it could be a manifestion of a sort of "need for community", the need to be part of a group -the group in itself is not that important-.
Some intelectuals who thought about the Internet phenomenum have said that this community thing was a demonstration of a loss of cultural identity, the expression of a need for comon values or at least comon centers of interest. They also said that this was a consequence of the growing individualism of the XXIth century. For my part I agree with this point of view, and I would add that this is a false way to create community since being a part of a virtual community doesn't mean you are actually in a community, you are still all alone in front of your computer. Internet doesn't necesarily or systematicaly creates social link.

Level 1 : student presentations

My example was www.monroman.net, a website which provide an automatic device to write personalized novel: you fill in a questionair, for instance "the hero's name, "his favourite meal", "the woman's name" etc. and the device writes a novel (you choose the style, thriller, humour...) including your requirements.
This website drew my attention because it shows one of the uncountable opportunities provided by the Internet nowadays. Moreover I think it is mostly interesting because it is a demonstration of our century's evolution towards individualism and above all one-to-one marketing, which a caracteristic of the Internet. Literature used to apear like the untouchable intelectual field and now even books can be personalized, which is, according to me, dazzling.

Marie's example was www.akutten.com, a very original website based on a concept that deals with personalized work, one-to-one principal. I think it goes with the same "wave", so to speack, of individualism and personalized product. This website proposes to design itself according to your choices. The device is dificult to describe but to do it shortly, you are given the oportunity to choose the graphic aspect of the site before you get to the main menu.

Erwan and Sylvain's work used the "vlog" device which enables to put videos on your blog thanks to an FTP server. This has more to do with generosity, giving something of yourself for free on the net. It is your personal creation that becomes avaible to anybody whereas you are not a professional. The frontiers between professions are becoming thiner end thiner thanks to this kind of accessible technology. You can see their instructive video on www.kalahann.blogspot.com.

They showed us another interesting website called www.heavy.com, which is based on a complete miw between content and advirtising. The menu is on the foregroud while you have an ad on the background. Moreover when you open a new page from the site or the menu, an ad apears on the screen before any content. Erwan found it interesting because he is keen on ad anyway. But for my part, even if I am interested in ad too, I found it rather surprising and kind of scary because it is a new way to introduce ad in your everyday life and in your actions. The other thing is that at the end you don't get what the website is made for, there are too many information and it is more confusing for the reader.

Preparation for january 4th

1/ Think about one new activity or idea in e-culture that your would like to share with us. This can be something we began exploring in our class or something you learned in another class, or something you have discovered on your own. Try to make it new, fresh and interesting for everyone.

As an interesting subject to talk about, I was thinking of Wikipedia’s case:
More information
I think that this affair reveal the limits of wikipedia's universalist model.

2/ Be prepared to discuss the entry that you worked on for Wikipedia. What was it? What did you add? What is the current status (ie, is it published?)

What I added on Wikipedia has been published and is still on line:
I chose to change my subject: I didn't talk about Stella Mc Cartney, as I said last time, but I talked about Douglas Kennedy's last novel, Les charmes discrets de la vie conjugale, which I read during my holidays.

Challenge november 30th

Challenge november 30th

Level one :

1/ Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Wiki supports hyperlinks and has simple text syntax for creating new pages and cross links between internal pages on the fly. Wiki is unusual among group communication mechanisms in that it allows the organization of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself. Like many simple concepts, "open editing" has some profound and subtle effects on Wiki usage. Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by nontechnical users.
Source: http://wiki.org/
2/ “Wiki” comes from the Hawaiian language and means at the same time quick and informal.
Level two:
The best known application of Wiki on the Internet is Wikipedia.
Yes I use it when I need information such as definitions.
Because it is very exhaustive and fast.
It has a strong international impact because it contents universal knowledge. Moreover, it is possible for anyone to add information about anything one wants. It is a form of planetary village.
The very fact that there is no selection, anyone can write anything he wants, make that it is universally open.
Level Three:
"I would ad an article on Stella Mc Cartney, a very well-known English cloth designer:
I found information about Stella McCartney on the magazine ELLE's website.

Level four:
A wiki could be used for an english class: everyone could post his answers and reactions to the others' answers, and it could be interesting even more in this class since some has knowledge for example on Interner that others don't.
Each page could correspond to a day of class (for example "November 30th") or to a subject "for example "podcast"). I would prefer that the content is categorized by subject because it would be easier and faster to find back all the references on this topic. On theses pages, anyone could post their own knowledge and comprehension on the subject.

Level Five:

Review questions of november 30th

Review questions for November 30

1. The exercise we did in class this week involved finding information. What was your best source of information to answer the questions? Why? What other strategies did you use to answer the questions?

My best source of information was Google.fr on which I found dictionaries and specialized websites concerning the definitions that were asked. As for finding examples of the diverse Internet models, I found the answers mostly in my memories and my own experience. I also asked for help to my friends when the sources on Internet were not sufficient enough.

2. At the end of class, we had a collection of answers available to all of you in the form of each student's blog. What is this effect called and what does it do? How can it be useful to you? Did you use it? What types of situations or tasks can it be useful in?

The fact that all students’ answers were available on Internet calls an effect of generosity, a sort of share of knowledge. It comes directly into Internet’s imaginary or ideal, that is to say that Internet is a space for everybody to share documents, answers and knowledge. But this remain strongly “community way of life” since we have to be part of the class to know the students’ blog address.
This can be useful for me because there are a lot of things I ignore about Internet and the tools it provides. Which is not the case of many student in the class. Therefore, there are many questions to which I can’t answer without asking for their help. I could find this help on their blog. It is also interesting to compare what they did to what I did, just to be sure I am not completely out of the subject.
I didn’t use it because I finished my work at the very end of the class and therefore I didn’t had the time to compare. As for taking a look at the others’ answers, I didn’t think of it before.

3.What is the difference between the attitude and approach of French people (in general) and Americans (in general) to technology and the adoption of new technologies? Should this change? How? What would help it change?

I think that the French people have a Cartesian tradition that make them always consider both positive and negative aspects of something, including new technologies. The French people would take the time to think on it, to confront different reflections. On the other hand, the Americans would try to take the more advantage of these new technologies, to consider how they could be useful to work faster and be more efficient. The French people would think about the possible consequences whereas the American people would consider the immediate advantages.
I don’t know if this could change, it is part of each country’s culture. I think both behaviors have its good and bad aspects. I think that the thing to do is to compile both point of view not to miss any aspect of this new technologies.

4. In more and more professions, the application of e-communications skills like we are developing is increasingly important. Give three examples of professions you are interested in where this is the case.

I am interested in journalism, where I know this application is abundantly used. I am also interested in being advertising consultant or crisis communication specialist.

5. Concerning the practice of ripping: what is your point of view on this practice? Is it illegal? Is it unethical? What are the moral considerations? Do you consider it normal? Why?

I don’t understand the unethical aspect of ripping. Maybe I have the wrong definition of it.

6. What are three things you learned from this exercise, two things that interested you, and one question you still have about the subjects mentioned?

I learnt about EULA, DRM, and FTP server. I was interested in FTP server because it could be useful, and I learnt about time-shifting, because I think it is the TV of the future (short-term future).

My scenario of podcasting

Are children ruder now than in the past? Do parents care?
Last month, an Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that nearly 70 percent of Americans said they believed that people are ruder now than they were 20 or 30 years ago, and that children are among the worst offenders. (As annoyances, they tied with obnoxious cellphone users.)
The conservative child psychologist John Rosemond recently denounced in his syndicated column the increasing presence of "disruptive urchins" who "obviously have yet to have been taught the basic rudiments of public behavior," as he related the wretched experience of dining in a four-star restaurant in the company of one child roller skating around his table and another watching a movie on a portable DVD player.
In 2002, only 9 percent of adults were able to say that the children they saw in public were "respectful toward adults," according to surveys done then by Public Agenda, a nonpartisan and nonprofit public opinion research group. In 2004, more than one in three teachers told Public Agenda pollsters they had seriously considered leaving their profession or knew a colleague who had left because of "intolerable" student behavior.
Even Madona - her "Papa Don't Preach" years long past - has joined the throng, proclaiming herself a proud "disciplinarian" in a recent issue of the British magazine Harpers & Queen and bragging that, as a mom, she takes a tough line on homework, tidiness and chores: "If you leave your clothes on the floor, they're gone when you come home."
M6’s superstar "Supernanny," would be proud.

Level Three

Level Three:

“Monetize a market model” is the kind of evolution we can observe about the Internet. Indeed Internet becomes more and more an object of marketing and profit, rather far from the imaginary that would say, at the beginning of Internet, that it symbolizes absolute generosity. For instance, a real battle is opposing the few leaders on the market of search engine.

--> à revoir + exemple

Level Two

Level Two:
1. Intellectual property allows people to own their creativity and innovation in the same way that they can own physical property. The owner of Intellectual Property can control and be rewarded for its use, and this encourages further innovation and creativity to the benefit of us all.
Give 5 examples:
-Copyrights for an album: in France it is forbidden to use a music or a song for instance in a movie or a TV show without paying fees to a company called the SASEM which redistributes money to the creator. This is to assure the creator an income on his production.
-Patent for an inventor, this Intellectual property allows the inventor to keep a short-term monopoly on his invention.
- Copyrights on photos used in the press: indeed in every printed production, as soon as a photo is printed, the name of the photographer or at least the agency is required so that the Intellectual property of the creator is respected and as for the music, it assures an income.
-Trade mark is all the signs of a brand identity (logo, music, slogan etc.). For instance, the car brand Opel had to sign a contract and pay a fee to use the brand of the film “Zorro”.
-As a last example, I think of the content of books. It is officially completely forbidden to photocopy any pages of books without paying fees to the publisher.

2. EULA: End-User License Agreement. It is the type of license used for most software. An EULA is a legal contract between the manufacturer and/or the author and the end user of an application. The EULA details how the software can and cannot be used and any restrictions that the manufacturer imposes. For instance when you want to by a train ticket on http://www.sncf.com/, you have to check in the case “I agree” that asserts that you agree to the conditions of the transaction, to achieve the sale.

3. DRM: Digital Rights Management. Any technology used to protect the interests of owners of content and services (such as copyright owners). Typically, authorized recipients or users must acquire a license in order to consume the protected material—files, music, movies—according to the rights or business rules set by the content owner.(www.microsoft.com/security/glossary.mspx)
For example, http://www.allocine.com/, a website specialized in movies and theatres, has to pay licence to use the artistic content of movies.

4. Pay-on-demand TV: It is a service available on Internet which provides the customer TV programs when they want and where they want, in exchange of payment on-line. It is called “on demand” because time and space are no longer determinant conditions. For example, ABC network said it would make available episodes of its hit shows "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" for viewing on Apple Computer Inc.'s new video iPod for $1.99.

5. Time shifting: It is a function used to stop an in live program on television in order to take it back the viewing later.

6. TIVO: Two brand names for a consumer video file server. These units will continually record what you are watching on television, allowing you to immediately replay parts of the program, pause the program, or record for viewing later.
For example, you are watching your favourite TV show and the telephone is ringing. You didn’t want to miss a second of the program. Thanks to TIVO you can pause the program and TIVO record the continuation of the program, so that once you had hung up the phone you can take back the viewing where you left it

7. An FTP server is a server that stores files and makes them available on the Internet via FTP. It is useful for example to share heavy files, such as photos, music or power points, without caring about the capability of the recipient’s mailbox.

8. Prime time TV and radio: it is temporal sections on TV or radio which collect the more audience. For example, on TV, what we call a prime time is a program broadcast between 08:00 and 11:00 p.m.

9. Long tail marketing strategy: It is the contrary of short term marketing strategy. It collects strategies and plans established on the long term, for instance several years.

10. Click and mortar company: It is said for the company who have a physical existence, that is to say a building or a physical space, and who have at the same time an “on line relay”, a website. It is the contrary of built and mortar.

11. Ripping: It is a way of translating analogical content into digital one. For instance, when you convert a compact disc into Mp3, it is a ripping.

Reading the data from an audio CD in order to convert it to MP3 or some other audio format. Ripping is nothing more than CD-DA (audio CD) to MP3 conversion; however, when the term was coined, it had a perverse meaning. Many people loved the idea that they were "ripping off" the music industry by making copyrighted works available in a format that could be quickly downloaded over the Internet.

12. Alternative journalism: It is a journalism that expresses itself into “un-recognized” website or printed form. That is to say that they don’t belong to a recognized group which grant them a certain independency to speak about whatever they want.

My example: alternet.org.

Midterm Exam Exercise-Level one

Midterm Exam Exercise

Level One:

1. An example of generosity on Internet is the Blog servers: they enable to create as many blogs as we want for free. For example, www.bloger.com which is interesting because there is no commercial link on the page. Another example is a French website, www.blogorama.fr, which is a website that tries to make the promotion of the on-line blogs whith categories such as “the most frequently read blogs” etc.

2. An example of outsourcing to the customer is www.ebay.com which replaces the auction places and also the salesmen. But they don’t outsource on Internet persons they would emply in “real life” since www.ebay.com only exists on the Net.

3. An example of cannibalizing one’s own market is www.guideduroutard.com which provides a space of free expression for the visitors of the website who want to deposit an advice or a question. To a certain extent the people themselves replace the guide in itself.

4. An example of creating a community of value could be www.telerama.fr, a French website associated to a printed magazine called Télérama. It is a rather cultural magazine for what we call in French the “CSP+”, that is to say the upper-middle class. The magazine provides opinion and critics on cultural manifestations or contemporary questions. On the website, the Forum is an important part: the internet users are free to discuss subject around themes chose by the moderator. It is a community since people not only give their opinion but they come back on the site to discuss the subject, and since they have to log in to access to the forum. And the values are very strongly asserted because the website takes the values delivered by the printed version.

5. An example of podcast that can help us learn English is the type of podcast extracted from the English news servers such as radios. For instance, the BBC podcasting is interesting because the English practiced is quite quick and we have to be very careful to understand. It gets us used to the spoken English and makes us improve our comprehension capability.

6. An old media organization using podcasting could be precisely the radio since podcasting is a sort of extension of the radio on Internet, a sort of radio on demand on line.

November 23th-Notes

FTP server of the class:
http://tools.0catch.com/ftptool/ecultureonline.0catch.com
the login is : ecultureonline.0catch.com --- the password : spaulding

Feedburner: permits your podcast to be picked up periodically by other programs, like iTunes!

Marie's answers about podcast-november 16th

Marie de Kergorlay 9/11/2005
CMM
E-learning

1. Common characteristics of podcats

Podcasting is a blanket term used to describe a collection of technologies for automatically distributing audio and video programs over the internet via a publish and subscribe model. Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published, syndicated "radio shows," and gives broadcast radio or television programs a new distribution method.
In the podcasting model, the publisher publishes a list of programs in a special format, known as a "feed", on the web. A user who wants to see or hear the podcast subscribes to the feed in special "podcatching" software (a type of aggregator), which periodically checks the feed and automatically downloads new programs as they become available. Typically, the podcatching software also transfers the program to a desktop or portable media player.
Most podcatching software facilitates copying podcasts to portable music players. Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play podcasts. From the earliest RSS-enclosure tests in 2000-2001, feeds have been used to deliver video files as well as audio. By 2005 some aggregators and mobile devices could receive and play video, but the "podcast" name remained most associated with audio.
"Podcasting" is a portmanteau that combines the words "broadcasting" and "iPod." The term can be misleading since neither podcasting nor listening to podcasts requires an iPod or any portable player, and no broadcasting is involved.
Aware of that misleading association from the beginning, some writers have suggested alternative names or reinterpretations of the letters "p-o-d", without winning much of a following.[1] One little-used alternative is "blogcasting", which implies content based on, or similar in format to, blogs. Another is "audioblogging."

2. What podcasts have you chosen for your personnal program for improving English?...

I choose CNN news podcast, because I studied Journalism before Communication at CELSA, and I am very interested by the way foreign media communicate. Moreover, at the CELSA, I also study media.

It will help me improve my English because journalists will speak fast but with a “journalism vocabulary”, I mean that on the radio or on television, when a journalist speaks, he has to be understood by lot of person. If I listen CNN, I could hear information about different subject, and thanks to that improve my my vocabulary on lot of themes.

I will listen it on my computer: I have Itunes and I can be connected to the Music store, and download CNN Podcasts, every week, the day before our course.

3. Example “information does not change behavior”

Example: it was about the smokers who don’t stop smoking, despite very clear information written on paquets ( “smokers die young”etc…)

Because media as been accused to “manipulate “ people, as if there were so powerfull and influent that human behavior couldn’t resist. But this example show limits of communication. To change their behavior, consumer have to want it, for themselves. There is a difference when you wish stop smoking and when you decide to stop for ever. Communication serve a message, but cannot act for human.
It takes times and most of the time a message deliver by a company or an organization has to be repted and guaranteed by the consumer’s friends or family.

4. Talent of our e-culture and communication class

Thanks to our class, we can hear English in a new way of communication: like “audioconférence”. In an ordinary class on media, communications or English language, our behavior aren’t the same. For example, as shy person can be more “interactive” on Internet.
We develop our written english, curiosity, creativity: because we are the first section at CELSA trying this class, so thanks to our ideas, we will help futur students of this class: that is called generosity.
To make more progress in this respect I can be more reactive to the questions on msn, find new ideas for class.

1.

2. Learning a language, like English, is not just learning vocabulary and grammar and studying books. It is also learning how to use the language in order to get things accomplished, create contact, maintain relationships, establish trust and so on. These are the social or professional functions of the language. In this respect, what are the ways you are learning English in our class by internet? How are you creating and maintaining contact and relationships? How are you using English? What are the ways you could do this better?

The first thing which strikes me in this class is that we learn at the same time written and conversational English. Indeed, we have first to speak into the microphone during the class, and express ourselves as clearly as we can so that you can understand us from where you are. It is a challenge to practice a foreign language not only written but spoken, and not only spoken during an oral exam but taking part of a conversation which is, moreover, virtual. Therefore, this English that we speak into the mic during the class can’t be of a perfect grammar and is more conversational, since you cannot stop the conversation every time we make a mistake, mostly because of the technical device. It is more a “contact English” because it serves to establish a connection with you even though you are in the south of France when we are in the north.
We are helped though from where we are by our notes, printed on papers. They are supposed to give us the directions of our explanation –because we are usually trying to explain our point of view-. This means that it is not real conversational English. I think that are notes are here for two things: serve as landmarks in our reflection, and to compensate our weaknesses with the language, which means in the end that they help to keep the contact with you in spite of the technical device and the language.
Finally we practice written English but to a lesser extent since we translate our work orally instead of working on the written version.
To conclude I think that we do more of oral and conversational English, we are helped by our notes and we work mainly on our capacity to express ourselves in order to maintain contact with an interlocutor.

1. What is an FTP server and why is it useful? What are some of the activities you can do with it? Do you have one available for you, and which one is it? If you don't have one, why don't you get one?

An FTP server is a server that stores files and makes them available on the Internet via FTP. It is useful because it enables to provide heavy files, such as photos, music or power points, without caring about the capability of the recipient’s mailbox. It is a sort of optimized blog. I don’t have one personally because I didn’t know about it before last week. I shall think about it, regarding my departure to Australia in February.

1. Our class has a special approach to interactivity. It is not possible to have the same interaction of a normal class, but it offers several new ways of interacting. What are these? What are the ways that are especially interesting to you? How could they work better? What technical solutions can you suggest?

The class offers the possibility to work on distant contact. As I said before (question1) it is an interesting challenge to try to be able to maintain contact and even progress in the work in spite of the distant and the technical device. We experiment also a sort of interactivity which came with Internet: instant messenger. It is a written immediacy, which used to appear as two contradictory words. It is an example of the kind of new associations Internet provides. As for podcasting it is clear that we have here another example of new link created by Internet: a sort of personalized radio, a sort of Tivo, or “on demand” contents. The fact that we can create our own podcast is related to this new kind of “multimedia interactivity”. For example, if I leave for a long time to another country, I can send news to my family orally!
To focus on the class, I think that we are working on this interesting “instant written conversation” which seems as a paradox. And we are trying to associate the image with the conversation. But I think we also discover the limits of the device. It is clearly not a “physical” conversation and I think it requires another way of communication. For example, it must slower. Maybe it is a way to take more time to work on answers… I think to understand better this new interactivity we have to remain aware, in spite of all the appearances, that we are not facing a “traditional” conversation and thereof we have to adapt our communication, the rythme, the words etc.

1. Prepare one question about the last class: what did you not understand? What would like to have more information on and why? What question did our discussion cause you to ask?

How do we create a podcast?

Review questions for November 23

Review questions for November 23

As always, PRINT you answers and bring them to class.
